Subject: AB 1936 (Sanchez): Insurance Commissioner qualifications. Oppose.
Dear Assembly Member Sanchez,
The Peace and Freedom Party of California strongly opposes AB 1936. While appearing to simply insure that the Insurance Commissioner be experienced with the field of insurance, the actual result is more likely to be an Insurance Commissioner with deep ties to the very industry they are charged with regulating.
California needs a truly independent commissioner who can act without favoritism or any appearance of favoring the very insurance industry they are regulating. To require insurance industry experience - as listed in this bill - will eliminate the possible candidacy of many knowledgeable and actually independent Insurance Commissioner candidates.
Furthermore, one of the provisions of this bill that allows an Insurance Commissioner to have a spouse or blood relative with an interest in an insurer, or to hold an insurance license, is an invitation to insider influence at the very least.
For these reasons the Peace and Freedom Party opposes AB 1936 and urges all legislators to vote against this bill. To learn more, please contact me at 916-207-4595 or
Sincerely,
John C. Reiger
